Greater things

Friends, I am excited.

I can’t help but think about how the coming month of September builds a bridge allowing us to now transition into fall.

The year thus far has been challenging, I admit. But it has also been one that has made me more alive than I ever have been. It has been marked by moments that have called me higher and taken me deeper than I could have imagined. It has not been easy, but it has been worth it.

As I head into what I would like to call a ‘bridge-building’ month, I can’t help but find myself in the tussle between what has been and what will be.

Between the black and white, there are always shades of grey.

As I ponder this, I am reminded that our souls have a tendency to believe that because it has always been a certain way, that’s the only way there is.

But I am discovering that nothing could be further from the Truth.

God is always doing a new thing. Though the scenary may not yet look like what He promised, the Good News is that it doesn’t look like what it did in the seasons past either.

There has been growth, there has been transformation, and there has been refining.

God has been on the move, friends.

In us. Through us. All around us.

But to be able to see clearly, sometimes we just have to be willing to spend some time with Jesus.

Some alone time with Him always helps us to unwind from the pain of what once was so that we have enough space and room in us to receive the new wine that He wants to pour out and pour in.

Being the gentleman that He is, I hear the Lord inviting us to come close. Rapping ever so gently on the door of our hearts and awaiting our response.

So shall we gear up, friend?

Shall we get ready to receive the outpouring of His Spirit?

Shall we leave behind the mess of seasons past so we can lay hold of the prize for which Jesus laid a hold of us?

Shall we lift our hearts in praise and thanksgiving, and let the King of glory enter in?

Shall we let Jesus cleanse our perspective to adjust the way we view God, ourselves and the world around us?

Shall we pour ourselves a cup of coffee as the Lord prepares a table for us and beckons us to dine full?

Shall we, friend?

I don’t know about you, but I love the feel of fall around this time. I love the sense of transition towards the latter part of the year where we can look forward to beautiful things like Advent and Christmas.

But I also know the value of transitioning well. And the one GPS that never fails me is Jesus.

He is my GPS.

He is the God who goes before me and is already sitting in my tomorrows. He knows the path ahead and meets me in the present moment with a Word.

Dropped from His heart into mine.

I call this my ‘heart-to-heart’ with the Lord.

For this is where I get to meet my Father and my Friend. This is where I experience His Love and His Mercy. This is where I enjoy sweet communion and true friendship. This is where I know that He has good plans for my future and good things in store for me.

And not just good things, but greater things.

“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”

(John 14:12, emphasis added)

So as I get ready to take my cup of cappaccino in hand, I lovingly invite you too, friend. I invite you to join me this ‘bridge-building’ month so that as we together get together with Jesus, we can learn to co-operate with the season at hand to do just that –

Build bridges.

With the bricks of love, the mortar of grace and the blocks of forbearance.

In our strength?

No.

But in His?

Yes.

So as I prepare my heart to transition in this time, I know that I may not know a lot but one thing I do know is this. In the kingdom of God, the greater things always begin with doing the next right thing.

For tiny steps of faith in the hands of Jesus always amount to gigantic leaps.

We sit. We stand. We run.

And sometimes, it all starts with a cup of coffee.

My next right thing.

Hand-in-hand with my Saviour, I wait upon Him to lay out the table.

Pinecones, cookies and cappaccino.

And guess what the Good News is?

Everyone’s invited.

You coming?
